Lion dance championship finals 2011

so we went on a little outing to watch the Lion Dance Championship Finals at Resort World Sentosa. I was more amazed at how much the lions reflected the fat cat, than anything else. quite an experience.

It has always boggled me how the F word is being used as bad language for the ineloquent. I mean, think about it. You're simply telling someone "SEX YOU!" in ancient English. Or so the net claims.

Why can't the uncouth find better substitutes than that? Like, I'm pretty sure "FORK YOU" would provide a mean enough threat of getting stabbed to death by a fork. Would you want that? No! It's sure going to hurt lots.

There are so many words in the dictionary which can be used to cause fear. Read the dictionary and stop sounding like a dog on heat. I mean, really, are you honestly planning to impregnate that walrus?

I was scrolling through Facebook today and pushing my nose into people’s lives, when I realised that I was getting depressed from seeing my ‘Friends’ living such wonderful lives, or what life up till now is for them. I was jealous of their beautiful pictures, their fun times, their outings to nowhere with friends who’d rather act as paparazzi than have fun, and just their overall gorgeousness in the pictures. yes, I must admit I was scouting through profiles of hot girls, but let’s not digress shall we.

but then I asked myself, why bother? why bother with a world where everything is just a mirage of smiles and laughter? I mean, I can do that too, am probably doing that too. no-one posts pictures of themselves getting depressed. everyone posts happy, funny moments. moments which we’re proud of.

somewhere, somehow, someone is probably looking at my profile, or this blog, and thinking “oh she’s got it so good. her life’s awesome. I’m jealous”. but that’s just it; I probably am jealous of theirs too.

this network we have here, it’s more like our ink to pen our fairy tales. it’s just our way of rummaging through cluttered minds to earn sympathy or envy in this messed up concept of human nature. so, why embark on an expedition to the infinite loop? why can’t we just all be happy with what we have? why must we all be so so blind.

so here I am, with a blurry picture of a miniscule moon hanging atop dazzling lights, because that’s how it accompanies this post and makes you go “wow, deeeeeep”. just like that’s just how social networks work, the make-believe world we paint to seek to impress the person on the other side of the screen. so tell me, are you awed? are you jealous? you had better be.

open the Paint software, get a random colour and a random painting tool (paint bucket/ brush/ pencil) and draw a random shape/ splash a random colour onto the canvas then draw the first thing which comes to your mind. try your best not to change the original splash to the best of your ability.

Yesterday I woke with my left leg numb from the thigh down. it was really really horrifying. first few steps I couldn't feel my foot, but as I continued standing there, the blood eased it's way down and that tingling sensation we all hate came raining down on my limb.

never want to try that again. so glad I still have my leg. just imagine, if I had woken up a few hours later, left leg completely devoid of blood, I wouldn't be able to walk, jump, climb, run, play.

Being there, it was like a tourist-free zone. we received lots of comments exclaiming how we were the first group of tourists to be seen after a 3 month hiatus. many tourist shops ended their business, hotels lost money, tour agencies struggled. the earthquake and tsunami may have been harsh on the people of Japan, but only the strong will go on, and the Japanese are strong people. things, I’m sure, will look up in the near future.

finally graduated after 3 years of slurring through school. it pains to find that I don’t find tears nor joy in this graduation, just an ‘okay, onto the next phase’ kind of feeling. I guess, it’s just one step closer to me finally going out and settling all that I set to do in life.

on another note, the graduation was, well, snap snap, okay I’m done, let’s go. mainly because I have had MANY differences with the people in my school, and that I find off-days from work very rare and treasured, so settling my to-do list was more important than hanging around and taking pictures with people whom I would probably meet again in the workforce someday.

so here, although there are probably 50 or so more pictures of me, me, my family and me, and me, in the folder. I guess you wouldn’t want to see so much of my face in this blog. hoho.

to be honest, the food wasn’t all that great. although yes, it was good, but not GREAT for the amount we paid. PLUS, the menu was so limited. so well, go to some other place for dimsum buffet if you must.

I’m such a failure at communication.

I may be proficient at speaking to important people, to business people, to elderly, to everyone else, but what’s the use of all that, when I’m totally verbally illiterate when I speak to my own loved ones? DIY fisheye lens

it started with; me really wanting to get that fisheye effect of blurred sides and focused centre, that itsy bitsy scrooge in me was screaming DON’T YOU DARE BUY A >$500 LENS, and my love for creating expensive products with my own hands. so I Googled for a while and settled to use the idea of this DIY using an uncut lens.

for those who want to skim through the passage and not read my long-winded notes, just take note of the bolds.

spent some time finding a lens because in Singapore, spectacle shops in malls don’t have their own machines to cut uncut lens. went to a shop at some neighbourhood (those standalone stores with their own name, not some franchise) and got a -350 (read that the higher the degree of the lens, the more curved the sides will be, but I think it also compromises the focus of the picture) long-sighted uncut lens at $14. I got the plastic one because I’m such a cheapo, and the glass ones are vulnerable in my hands, PLUS glass is really heavy. plastic lenses are usually thinner and look like an enlarged contact lens, something like the picture above.

then I went home and with the curved side facing the camera lens, played around with the distance of the uncut lens from the camera lens, to find the perfect distance to get that fisheye effect. too near would cause your picture to look like you simply Gaussian blurred it, too far will look like a microscope view. for me, it was the distance between the second ring of my index finger to the tip of it, but different people would have different focal lengths to suit their standards.

after finalising the distance, I had to rummage through our cabinets to find a bottle or can or something to hold the lens. trial and error-ed twice, destroyed one metal peanut can and one takeaway ice-cream container before finding a Skippy bottle which was able to fit the camera lens.

sawed the bottle and masking taped it to blunt the edges. didn’t really want to ruin my 18-55mm with a peanut butter bottle.

painted the rim black to prevent light seepage.

and voila! my unprofessional fish eye lens. when taking, set to manual focus, this is really important because your lens will be confused by the sudden change in view and would turn out either terribly unfocused, or not even being able to focus at all.

the only problem with taking really sharp pictures is that you have to be at least 60cm to the article for it to be focused. I think this is due to the fact that the lens is primarily used for focusing on near objects, therefore the distant objects are not 'in the picture' (hahaha pun bun fun).

I use a Canon EOS 550D with an 18-55mm lens and have not tried my fisheye with other lenses, so right now I’m unsure if it will work the same for other lenses. just a note though, the picture quality WILL be compromised, mainly because we’re looking through a long-distance spectacle lens. it’s the same as looking through your grand-dad's old man specs, the image gets a little unfocused, but for $14, hey, what did you expect?

Farm visits

went for a farm trip to escape the city life, ended up going for our very first official (previously I’ve just been dipping my feet into my house fish pond) fish spa and first independent prawning. overstayed both time limits but both business owners didn’t bother to chase us off. the moon that night was gorgeous, round, yellow and so so low. but alas, Caia isn’t meant to take pictures of the night goddess.

took an off day from work to run some errands in the morning, then met R for lunch and some walking around. the sun was killer so we had to frequently dodge into shades and take many many many breaks to ease our exhaustion.

for the last Photoshopped photo, the perfectionist in me is screaming for me to do better. should’ve de-shined our hair and de-sharpen the edges from the original, but I’m learning to go easy on expectations. so, sorry inner self, next time?

Friends, they're just like leather jackets. you either get a hundred PVC ones which come and go, or you get one goddamned sexy soft calf leather and have it age beautifully and mold to your creases as time goes by.

I'm happy I have such a pretty girl as my leather jacket. (yes, I'm calling you a cow) honestly, I have no idea how she takes my nonsense and constant nagging. am still waiting for that day where she finally loses it and blares all horns at me for poking her way too far. heehee. b, why your tolerance limit so high?!?!?!

then again, I'm not even sure if she comes to this space at all. tsk.

but with leather jackets, there may come disappointments as well. you may have found a really awesome piece, but it got into the rain, or a beverage spills onto it, and it gets marked. it's no longer that flawless beautiful piece you found hanging on the shelf at Acquaintance Jetty, the shades are off colour and having it around feels so foreign.

what do you do? make the effort to reinstate it's former beauty? wear it out and get used to it? or give up, and give it away.

now with me saying all these, I'm sure to get comments which mimic the child's line; 'say others, say yourself'. I know I have 'disappeared' from certain groups of friends, but honestly? if I don't feel like I'm treasured as a friend, I don't see the point of being there. why try and make things right when you're just gonna become landfill? I'm sorry, I'd much rather be a dried cow than a piece of flaking plastic under a pile of garbage.

friends are people who understand who you are and know that we don't have to live for you. we live for ourselves, and we support each other along the way. that's how it was supposed to be, if someone rather spends her time with another, let them be. forcing them won't do anything but materialise a sanding board with wired traps all around.

ah, such depressing matters. I can totally hear the man saying 'why let it affect you???' at this point of time. but hey, my 5th favourite hobby is to mull over things for way too long.

Homemade airpopped popcorn

homemade air popped popcorn; get some popcorn kernels (or dried corn kernels if you want to be a perfectionist), throw them in a paper bag, tape the bag close and throw it into the microwave. listen to the popping and be careful, don’t over burn the popcorns. mine turned out pretty burnt cause I was too busy creating my oversweet lemongrass caramel for the coating.

going to try the wok method some other time, then try to perfect the mushroom popcorn. yay for healthy popcorn! tomato and popcorn anyone?

Failed kite flying sessions

went on a thrift trip (say it fast thrifttrip thrifttrip thrifttrip) with the man and ended up getting lost in the sweltering heat. then we went kite flying with my disintegrating childhood kite because the man was unable to choose a second backup kite.

side note, what’s with guys and their wishy washy-ness? frustrates me to no end with their ‘anything’ or ‘your choice’. hello, if we were going to make it our choice we’d have decided already. we want YOU to make the decision so it’s not the time to act all chivalrous. tsk! so there, we had a failed kite flying session.

but hey hey, it’s not the quantity. it’s the quality. ;)

pardon me for my shabby dressing that day. it was really really really hot, like heat stroke kind of hot, and I have a really low tolerance for heat. was > < this close to wearing a leotard and walking out of the house. decided not to, for fear of blinding others with my thunderous thighs.

and on a serious note, having had to kick out George Yeo for an opposition party to be in the Government may seem like a heartless choice to make, but just to keep the MAIN PARTY in check, we need someone in there to stick their noses into everything.

Hort park’s a really beautiful place, located right in the midst of the dead-end boring job-ed workplace of Alexandra road. Secluded and serene yet with the right amount of families and children running around.

the Tree-top walk leads to Mt. Faber, Henderson park and I forgot the last one. have yet to embark on the journey to the west (?) though. till then, another picture-full post awaits!

Lion king the musical

Watched Lion King the musical last night at Marina Bay Sands with the company. Oh.my.god. it was awesome. the choreography was wonderful. movements were simple but positioning and stage usage was so damned good. makes me feel like joining a musical now. :3

and regarding the post below, just a disclaimer, I'm ranting. I'm not saying I hate my job. It's just I have been exhausted everyday for half a year already and I needed a space to complain. so if you're not fond of complains, I sincerely apologise.
My blog isn't a fashion blog or food blog. it's an unprofessional means for me to speak my view and rant to whoever's listening because this is MY space. funny, I should go to myspace huh. MY space, myspace. geddit? giggles.

yknow, I've been at this job for almost half a year, and I do like it. it lets me really expand my horizon and get to touch, feel and smell how being in a information systems' team is like. I like it, I like meeting business users, I like having discussions till late (mostly cause I get OT pay), I like piecing together AS-IS processes to TO-BE ones and see the entire picture form as I fit the jigsaw together.

now as much as I love my job, it is very physically and mentally draining. I go home dead tired everyday and concuss till my alarm rings next morning.

Not only that, Singapore's 44 hour work week is really a killer. I don't have much of a social circle (not that I actually had one in the first place), I barely spend time with my family, much lesser time with the lover and no time at all for myself.

I guess this is one of the reasons many prefer to go abroad. I want to go abroad, but leaving the family and friends behind isn't something I can phantom. looks like I'll have to slog it out for the next 20 years of my life huh.

The boyfriend came over with the intention of baking some goodies from a dessert book he recently bought. but as we were shopping for groceries, we digressed from icing sugar and canned peaches, to baguettes, ham and cheese.

General elections’ all the talk around town these few days. Not being of age to vote yet makes me feel rather bummed. I want in! Elections are so much more drama than Taiwanese serial dramas. Such a change from our boring no-lifer days. Yay for elections! Yay yay!

A colleague of mine came back from her holiday and brought back lots of sweets for the office. In the bag was this brightly coloured really intriguing sweet which screamed COME STEAL ME NOW, so I did. The brown was chocolate, yellow; banana and pink; bubble gum. Tasted really really awesome, but straight after I swallowed it I felt like throwing it back out for the excessive amount of artificial flavourings and colourings.

I should really just stick to the not so coloured goods.

Wearing the housemasters’ shoes

Walk a mile in someone’s shoes and understand their hardships.

I did literally walk in someone’s shoes, just not a mile, but around the entire house. With the two housemasters gone, all the household chores befell onto the single lady residing in the house. (insert single ladies soundtrack) finally understood why my grandma always did the washing late at night and why my mum always used many 3M mop cloths, instead of constantly rinsing one.

now don’t get me wrong here, I do do the household chores. it’s just I’m in charge of the kids’ level. the adults take care of the communal level. so don’t go around accusing me and flapping chicken wings at me telling me it served me right for having to go through this entire week.

and I’m not saying it’s a torture. it wasn’t. it was actually very fun. I actually enjoyed being able to control the cleanliness of the house myself. I guess I’m more of a control/clean freak than I expected myself to be. hoho.

on a lighter note, on one of the nights I was hanging out the clothes, I looked up and stared in awe at the glowing ancient panda scripture. sort of felt like a pop up from some martial arts movie and I was the chosen one to pass on the secret of the panda clan. or something like that. imagination guys, imagination.
